The Oracle

After previous character work for Battle Casters, I wanted to challenge myself by designing the unseen force in the 80’s film The Neverending Story. Although she is nameless and briefly mentioned I thought this would be a fun way to hone my design process and to present more recent projects.

My design process started with collecting several articles for acute literary analysis of how varying cultures and historical references portray oracles. I looked into several resources and as I did that, began to come to a better understanding of who this character might be and what they represent.

With an idea of who this might be, I began to sketch out multiple iterations of outfits. This included the use of tracing paper over a mannequin base model. After several iterations I came up with 25 looks to present for feedback, narrowing these down to their shapes and colors that I might use. With this advice I revised the looks into more refined digital sketches. After finally deciding which would be the final look I moved onto sketching out veils, hairstyles, and face accessories.
